How?
We reckon we start with 3 point plan, and four core responses…
3 Point Plan
We have a plan. It’s a three point plan.
1. Unite movements and people who are negatively affected by malignant media in realising the severity of this shared issue
2. Collaborate with ‘the four core responses to media issues: Replace, Regulate, Radicalise and Resist
3. Coordinate moments of revolution – such as Media Liberation Day, 5th November, annually – where all four responses align for a moment of awareness and action!
If you’re ready, find out how to get involved.
Four Core Responses
Around the world, many diverse responses to media harm exist.
These strategies often operate in silos, disconnected or in tension with one another. Regulators may distrust decentralised platforms, those building replacements may see regulation as futile, radical innovators may focus on content without challenging ownership, those resisting media harms may find themselves overwhelmed, isolated, or ignored, and resistance is seen as only for a radical few.
Media Revolution seeks to connect many of the efforts in the ecosystem and co-create a space for the work to be done in support of each of the responses, bringing a shift from a landscape dominated by corporate, extractive, and harmful forces into one that is community-led, independent, and accountable.
We have identified four core strategic responses, and many groups already working in these areas:
REPLACE
Independent media is often set up to offer an alternative to the malignant media. Which it often does brilliantly. Also, decentralised social networks exist which offer real alternatives to the standard social media platforms and apps.
REGULATE
Globally, media is poorly regulated. Unlike food, water, and other public services, media, especially news outputs, seem to operate outside of rules and regulations which would protect people from disinformation or inaccuracy.
RADICALISE
From the word ‘root’ radicalise in this context doesn’t mean to be extreme – it means to have better representation, from voices which get ignored, silenced or marginalised from mainstream coverage.
RESIST
Pushing back, saying no. Whether that’s a digital boycott, or a protest outside a media HQ – there is a long history of resistance against malpractice in the media
COLLABORATION
Our theory is that when we find ways to work together – in the overlaps, magic happens – and the conditions for a revolution can be found.
